Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals (PL-900) practice exam & study guide

The Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals (PL-900) is Microsoft’s foundational certification for the Microsoft Power Platform. It validates the ability to describe the business value of Power Platform and demonstrate the capabilities of Power Apps, Power Automate, Microsoft Dataverse, and agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio.

PL-900 is an entry-level, concept-focused exam. Questions describe a business need and ask which Power Platform component or capability addresses it — you are expected to understand what each tool does rather than build production solutions.

This free hub gives you everything you need to prepare: a syllabus breakdown by exam domain, realistic practice questions with teacher-style explanations, a glossary of the Power Platform services the exam relies on, and full-length timed mock exams that mirror the real testing experience.

PL-900 frequently asked questions

What is the PL-900 certification?+

Microsoft positions PL-900 as validating foundational knowledge of the business value and product capabilities of Microsoft Power Platform. It is aimed at people starting their journey building low-code solutions.

It covers the business value of Power Platform, managing the Power Platform environment and Microsoft Dataverse, the capabilities of Power Apps and Power Automate, and building and managing agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio — a domain that reflects the platform’s recent shift toward AI-powered agents.

What topics are on the PL-900 exam?+

The PL-900 exam is organised into five weighted skill areas. The percentages below sit within Microsoft’s published ranges (for example 20–25%), normalized to total 100, so treat them as a study-time guide. The four capability areas each carry similar weight, while business value is the lightest.

Describe the business value of Microsoft Power Platform (8%)

The lightest area. It covers the business value of the Power Platform services — Power Apps for building applications, Power Automate for automating processes, Dataverse for organizing data, connectors for integration, Power Pages for websites, generative AI features, and Copilot Studio for creating agents.

Manage the Microsoft Power Platform environment (23%)

Covers Microsoft Dataverse (how it differs from traditional databases, tables, columns, relationships, forms, views, and business logic including Power Fx) and Power Platform administration and governance (environments, the security model, data privacy, monitoring and analytics, and application lifecycle management with pipelines).

Demonstrate the capabilities of Power Apps (23%)

Covers Power Apps capabilities and use cases — canvas apps, model-driven apps, Plan designer, and code apps — and how to build basic apps, including using AI to create canvas and model-driven apps and the vibe app-building experience.

Demonstrate the capabilities of Power Automate (23%)

Covers Power Automate use cases and capabilities — cloud and desktop flows and scenarios such as approvals, Teams, Outlook, SharePoint, Forms, and document automation — and how to build basic flows using connector triggers and actions and AI assistance.

Describe features and capabilities of agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio (23%)

Covers building agents in Copilot Studio — use cases, conversation paths using topics, knowledge sources, tools including MCP servers and agent flows, and publishing agents to channels — and managing agents, including Microsoft Agent 365, monitoring usage and adoption, and agent evaluations.

Is the PL-900 hard?+

PL-900 is a fundamentals exam and one of the more approachable certifications: it tests conceptual understanding of what each Power Platform tool does rather than hands-on building. Most candidates pass with a few weeks of study.

The main challenge is telling the components apart and matching them to scenarios — canvas versus model-driven apps, cloud versus desktop flows, and where Dataverse and Copilot Studio fit. The current exam also emphasises AI-powered agents, so make sure your study material is up to date.

How many questions are on the PL-900 exam and how long is it?+

Microsoft does not fix a single public question count for PL-900; it typically presents roughly 40–60 questions in a mix of formats — multiple choice, multiple response, and drag-and-drop — within about 60 minutes of working time.

Our full-length practice mock uses a 65-question, 90-minute session so you can rehearse pacing under realistic time pressure before test day.

What score do you need to pass the PL-900?+

Microsoft scores PL-900 on a scale of 1 to 1,000, and the passing score is 700. That is a scaled score rather than a raw 70%, because Microsoft adjusts for question difficulty, and there is no penalty for wrong answers, so you should never leave a question blank. Our practice mock uses a 70% threshold to give you a comparable target.

How much does the PL-900 exam cost?+

The PL-900 exam fee is set by Microsoft and varies by region — check the Microsoft certification page for current pricing, and note that fundamentals certifications like this one do not expire. Everything on this hub is free.

Who should take the PL-900?+

Power Platform Fundamentals is aimed at people beginning to build low-code solutions — business analysts, aspiring makers, and IT professionals who want to understand what the platform can do.

Microsoft recommends only general familiarity with technology and business concepts. No development experience is required — the exam is about understanding capabilities, not writing production apps.

What jobs and salaries can the PL-900 lead to?+

PL-900 is relevant for aspiring Power Platform makers, functional consultants, and business analysts, and for anyone whose role touches low-code automation. It is a foundation for role-based certifications such as the Power Platform App Maker and Functional Consultant.

How much any certification affects pay depends heavily on geography, seniority, and hands-on experience, so treat any single salary figure with caution. PL-900 is best viewed as a way to demonstrate foundational Power Platform literacy rather than a guaranteed raise on its own.

How long does it take to study for the PL-900?+

Most candidates need two to four weeks at roughly an hour a day. The most efficient path is to learn the five skill areas in order while clicking through a trial Power Platform environment, drilling the topic quiz for each before moving on.

Review every explanation, including for questions you answered correctly, because PL-900 distractors are built from plausible but incorrect components or capabilities. Use the per-domain results here to find and shore up your weakest area, then finish with full-length timed mocks.

How should you prepare for the PL-900?+

Study the five skill areas above — the four capability areas carry similar weight, so spread your time across them — then drill practice questions area by area. Every MockAPI question reveals a full explanation and tells you why each wrong answer is wrong, which is the fastest way to learn what belongs to which tool.

When you can answer topic drills comfortably, move to a full-length timed mock to rehearse pacing, ideally alongside a free Power Platform trial. Use the glossary to keep the component names straight, and aim to score consistently above the pass mark before you book.

Can you take the PL-900 exam online?+

Yes. Microsoft delivers PL-900 through Pearson VUE, so you can test at a physical Pearson VUE centre or online with remote proctoring (OnVUE). The online exam requires a private, quiet room, a clear workspace, a webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and government-issued photo ID, with a proctor monitoring you and a room scan before you start.

If you do not pass, Microsoft requires a 24-hour wait before a second attempt; after that, a 14-day wait applies between further attempts, with a limit of five attempts in a 12-month period, and each attempt needs its own registration.

What certification should you take after the PL-900?+

After PL-900, common next steps include role-based Power Platform certifications such as the Power Platform App Maker Associate (PL-100) and Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate (PL-200), which build on these fundamentals with hands-on skills.

If your interest is data or Azure more broadly, the DP-900 and AZ-900 fundamentals exams pair well. Pairing any of these with hands-on practice is what turns a certificate into a career.
