AB-730 frequently asked questions

What is the AB-730 certification?+

Microsoft positions AB-730 for candidates who use generative AI–powered productivity tools, including Microsoft 365 Copilot and agents such as Researcher and Analyst, to improve daily work and make informed business decisions.

It expects a basic understanding of Microsoft 365 and comfort with core apps such as Outlook, Word, Teams, PowerPoint, and Excel, plus familiarity with common business processes — with no coding or app development required.

What topics are on the AB-730 exam?+

The AB-730 exam is organised into three weighted domains. This hub reflects Microsoft’s skills-measured update effective July 22, 2026 — the domain groups are unchanged, with only minor sub-topic revisions. The percentages below are the midpoints of Microsoft’s published ranges (for example 35–40%), normalized to total 100, so treat them as a study-time guide. Managing prompts and conversations carries the most weight.

Understand generative AI fundamentals (30%)

Covers generative AI capabilities across Microsoft 365 experiences (privacy and security, how context affects responses, chat versus agent experiences, use cases for creating an agent) and responsible AI and data protection practices (fabrications, prompt injection, over-reliance, verification steps, protecting sensitive data).

Manage prompts and conversations by using AI (40%)

The largest domain. Covers creating and managing prompts in Microsoft 365 Copilot (effective prompts, referencing resources, saving, scheduling, sharing), managing conversations (finding, deleting, renaming, adding to a notebook), and creating and managing Copilot agents (Agent Store versus building, templates, knowledge, settings, sharing).

Draft and analyze business content by using AI (30%)

Covers drafting business documents and communications (creating documents from prompts or existing documents, management summaries, moving data between apps) and managing meetings and collaboration (Copilot for meetings, Copilot Pages, how Copilot uses memory and instructions).

Is the AB-730 hard?+

AB-730 is a fundamentals exam, so it tests practical understanding of using Copilot rather than technical configuration. The concepts are approachable but assessed through realistic business scenarios.

The main challenge is knowing how to craft effective prompts, when to use agents, and how to apply responsible-AI verification. Hands-on use of Microsoft 365 Copilot makes the difference.

How many questions are on the AB-730 exam and how long is it?+

Microsoft does not fix a single public question count for AB-730; fundamentals exams typically present roughly 40–60 questions in a mix of formats — multiple choice and multiple response — and Microsoft allots 45 minutes to complete the assessment.

Our full-length practice mock uses a 60-question, 45-minute session so you can rehearse pacing under realistic time pressure before test day.

What score do you need to pass the AB-730?+

Microsoft scores AB-730 on a scale of 1 to 1,000, and the passing score is 700. That is a scaled score rather than a raw 70%, because Microsoft adjusts for question difficulty, and there is no penalty for wrong answers, so you should never leave a question blank. Our practice mock uses a 70% threshold to give you a comparable target.

How much does the AB-730 exam cost?+

The AB-730 exam fee is set by Microsoft and varies by region — check the Microsoft certification page for current pricing, and note that fundamentals exams are typically lower-cost. Microsoft fundamentals certifications do not expire. Everything on this hub is free.

Who should take the AB-730?+

AB-730 is aimed at business users, analysts, and knowledge workers who use Microsoft 365 Copilot to improve daily work, and at anyone wanting to validate practical generative AI productivity skills.

Microsoft recommends a basic understanding of Microsoft 365 and comfort with core apps, with no coding required and no formal prerequisite.

What jobs and salaries can the AB-730 lead to?+

AB-730 maps to any business role that uses Microsoft 365 Copilot — analysts, managers, consultants, and knowledge workers — where applying AI to draft, analyze, and decide is increasingly expected.

How much any certification affects pay depends heavily on geography, seniority, and hands-on experience, so treat any single salary figure with caution. As a fundamentals credential, AB-730 is best viewed as validation of practical AI-productivity skill.

How long does it take to study for the AB-730?+

Many candidates prepare for AB-730 in one to three weeks, less with regular Microsoft 365 Copilot use. The most efficient path is to study each domain while actually using Copilot to draft, analyze, and build agents.

Review every explanation, including for questions you answered correctly, because fundamentals distractors are built from plausible but incorrect statements. Use the per-domain results here to find and shore up your weakest area, then finish with full-length timed mocks.

How should you prepare for the AB-730?+

Study the three domains above, giving the heaviest weight to managing prompts and conversations, then drill questions domain by domain. Every MockAPI question reveals a full explanation and tells you why each wrong answer is wrong — essential for a scenario-based fundamentals exam.

When you can answer questions comfortably, move to full-length timed mocks alongside hands-on Copilot use. Use the glossary to keep concepts like grounding, agents, and prompt injection straight, and aim to score consistently above the pass mark before you book.

Can you take the AB-730 exam online?+

Yes. Microsoft delivers AB-730 through Pearson VUE, so you can test at a physical Pearson VUE centre or online with remote proctoring (OnVUE). The online exam requires a private, quiet room, a clear workspace, a webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and government-issued photo ID, with a proctor monitoring you and a room scan before you start.

If you do not pass, Microsoft requires a 24-hour wait before a second attempt; after that, a 14-day wait applies between further attempts, with a limit of five attempts in a 12-month period, and each attempt needs its own registration.

What certification should you take after the AB-730?+

After AB-730, common next steps include the Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals (AB-900) for the admin side, or role-based fundamentals such as the Microsoft 365 Fundamentals or Azure AI Fundamentals successors.

For many, the real next step is applying Copilot day to day to work faster and make better decisions. Pairing AB-730 with regular hands-on use is what turns the certificate into an advantage.
