AWS Certified Generative AI Developer - Professional (AIP-C01) practice exam & study guide

The AWS Certified Generative AI Developer - Professional (AIP-C01) is AWS’s professional certification for building generative AI applications. It validates the ability to integrate foundation models into applications and workflows using vector stores, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), agents, prompt engineering, and Responsible AI on AWS — primarily with Amazon Bedrock.

AIP-C01 is a professional, scenario-driven exam for developers who build production generative AI on AWS. Questions describe an application requirement and ask which foundation-model approach, architecture, or AWS service best implements it.

This free hub gives you everything you need to prepare: a syllabus breakdown by exam domain, realistic scenario-style practice questions with teacher-style explanations, a glossary of the AWS generative-AI services the exam relies on, and full-length timed mock exams that mirror the real testing experience.

AIP-C01 frequently asked questions

What is the AIP-C01 certification?+

AWS positions the Generative AI Developer - Professional as validating practical skill in taking foundation models into production — designing RAG and agentic architectures, integrating models into applications, and applying security, governance, and Responsible AI.

It centers on Amazon Bedrock and related services, and expects you to reason about model selection, prompt engineering, cost and performance optimization, and evaluation rather than training models from scratch.

What topics are on the AIP-C01 exam?+

The AIP-C01 exam is organised into five weighted domains. The percentages below are AWS’s official weightings for scored content. Foundation-model integration and implementation carry the most weight.

Foundation Model Integration, Data Management, and Compliance (31%)

The heaviest domain. It covers selecting and evaluating foundation models, designing solutions with vector stores, embeddings, and Retrieval Augmented Generation, building and managing knowledge bases, and managing data for generative AI including privacy, PII, and compliance.

Implementation and Integration (26%)

Covers integrating foundation models into applications and business workflows through Bedrock APIs and SDKs, applying prompt engineering and prompt management, implementing agentic AI with Bedrock Agents and action groups, and composing multi-step architectures with Lambda, Step Functions, and API Gateway.

AI Safety, Security, and Governance (20%)

Covers Responsible AI with Amazon Bedrock Guardrails and content filtering, securing generative AI applications with IAM, encryption, and private model access, governing model use with logging and auditability, and mitigating prompt injection, jailbreaks, and data-exfiltration risks.

Operational Efficiency and Optimization for GenAI Applications (12%)

Covers optimizing for cost (model selection, token budgets, caching, provisioned throughput) and for performance and latency (streaming, distillation, inference profiles), and scaling generative AI workloads while managing quotas and throttling.

Testing, Validation, and Troubleshooting (11%)

The smallest domain. It covers evaluating foundation-model output quality with Bedrock model evaluation jobs and human or automatic metrics, testing for RAG relevance and hallucinations, and troubleshooting and monitoring generative AI applications in production.

Is the AIP-C01 hard?+

AIP-C01 is a professional-level, developer-focused exam and a clear step above the foundational AI Practitioner (AIF-C01). It expects hands-on judgment about building and operating generative AI, not just awareness of concepts.

The difficulty comes from choosing between approaches under real constraints — when to use RAG versus fine-tuning, how to design guardrails, how to control cost and latency — and from the breadth of Bedrock features. Practising scenario questions until those trade-offs are second nature is the key.

How many questions are on the AIP-C01 exam and how long is it?+

The live AIP-C01 exam contains 75 questions to be answered in 180 minutes — 65 scored plus 10 unscored questions AWS uses to trial future content — delivered as multiple-choice and multiple-response items. Our full-length practice mock mirrors the length and timing with a 75-question, 180-minute timer.

Because it is a professional exam, expect long scenario stems that describe an application, its constraints, and a goal, then ask for the best generative-AI design.

What score do you need to pass the AIP-C01?+

AWS scores AIP-C01 on a scaled range of 100 to 1,000, and you need 750 to pass. The score is scaled rather than a simple percentage, and there are no per-domain pass marks — you need an overall 750. Our practice mock flags a pass at 75% to give you a comparable target.

How much does the AIP-C01 exam cost?+

The AIP-C01 exam costs 300 USD (prices vary by region), and the certification is valid for three years. Everything on this hub — questions, mock exams, glossary, and domain guides — is completely free.

Who should take the AIP-C01?+

The Generative AI Developer - Professional is aimed at developers and engineers who build generative AI applications on AWS — application developers, ML-adjacent engineers, and solutions builders.

AWS recommends two or more years building production applications on AWS or open-source technologies, general AI/ML or data-engineering experience, and about one year of hands-on experience implementing generative AI solutions.

What jobs and salaries can the AIP-C01 lead to?+

AIP-C01 is relevant to roles such as generative AI developer, application developer, and ML engineer building GenAI features, where shipping production generative AI on AWS is core to the job.

How much any certification moves compensation depends heavily on geography, seniority, and hands-on experience, so treat any single salary figure with caution. AIP-C01 is best viewed as validation of practical generative-AI development skill on AWS rather than a guaranteed raise on its own.

How long does it take to study for the AIP-C01?+

Candidates with generative-AI experience on AWS often need six to ten weeks; those newer to Bedrock should plan longer. The most efficient path is to study each domain while building with Amazon Bedrock, then drill scenario questions that force architecture and service-selection decisions.

Spend the majority of your time on full-length timed mocks in the final stretch, reviewing every explanation — including for questions you answered correctly — because AIP-C01 distractors are usually valid approaches that do not best fit the stated constraints. Use the per-domain results here to find your weakest area.

How should you prepare for the AIP-C01?+

Study the five domains above, giving the most time to foundation-model integration and implementation, then drill scenario questions domain by domain. Every MockAPI question reveals a full explanation and tells you why each wrong answer is wrong — essential when the wrong options are plausible GenAI designs.

When you can justify your choices comfortably, move to full-length timed mocks to rehearse pacing, ideally alongside hands-on practice with Amazon Bedrock. Use the glossary to keep the services straight, and aim to score consistently above the pass mark before you book.

Can you take the AIP-C01 exam online?+

Yes. AWS delivers AIP-C01 through Pearson VUE, both at test centers and online with remote proctoring (OnVUE). The online exam requires a private, quiet room, a clear workspace, a webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and government-issued photo ID, with a proctor monitoring you and a room scan before you start.

If you do not pass, AWS applies a 14-day waiting period before you can retake the exam, and each attempt needs its own registration and fee. There is no limit on lifetime attempts, but the waiting period applies between each.

What certification should you take after the AIP-C01?+

AIP-C01 pairs naturally with the foundational AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) and the Machine Learning Engineer - Associate (MLA-C01) for a fuller AI/ML profile, and with the Solutions Architect track for broader AWS design skill.

For many, the real next step is shipping generative AI features to production. Pairing AIP-C01 with hands-on Amazon Bedrock experience is what turns the certificate into a career.
