What topics are on the CDPSE exam?+

The CDPSE exam is organised into four weighted domains. The percentages below are ISACA’s official weightings for the current exam content outline, so bias your study toward the heaviest domain — Privacy Engineering alone is close to 40% of the exam.

Privacy Governance (20%)

Covers privacy governance (personal data, roles, and strategy), privacy laws and regulations, privacy principles, privacy program management and policies, the privacy-security relationship, and data/system ownership and third-party management. (Privacy frameworks and privacy awareness training are assessed under the Privacy Risk Management and Compliance domain.)

Privacy Risk Management and Compliance (18%)

Covers privacy impact assessments (PIA/DPIA), threat and risk identification for personal data, privacy risk treatment, monitoring and reporting, privacy audits and control assessments, regulatory obligations, and program metrics.

Data Life Cycle Management (23%)

Covers data purpose (inventory, classification, quality, and flow mapping), collection/use/retention limitation, data persistence and minimization, and secure destruction across the lifecycle. (De-identification, anonymization, and pseudonymization are drilled as technical controls in the Privacy Engineering domain.)

Privacy Engineering (39%)

The largest domain. Covers privacy architecture (infrastructure, applications, and technical controls), privacy by design and by default in the development lifecycle, privacy-enhancing technologies, consent and preference management, identity and access for privacy, and technical enforcement of privacy requirements.

Is the CDPSE hard?+

CDPSE is challenging because it spans both privacy governance and hands-on engineering: you must translate privacy principles into concrete technical controls in systems and data flows.

The heavy weighting on privacy engineering rewards practical experience embedding privacy into architecture and code, not just knowing the law.

How many questions are on the CDPSE exam and how long is it?+

The CDPSE exam consists of 120 multiple-choice questions completed within a timed session.

What score do you need to pass the CDPSE?+

ISACA scores CDPSE on a scaled range of 200 to 800, and you need a scaled score of 450 to pass. Your raw performance is converted to this scaled score, and there is no penalty for guessing, so answer everything. Our practice mock uses a 70% threshold as a study checkpoint; aim comfortably beyond it before test day.

How much does the CDPSE exam cost?+

The CDPSE exam fee is set by ISACA and differs for members and non-members — check the ISACA site for current pricing. How long does it take to study for the CDPSE?+

Candidates with some privacy or engineering background often need six to ten weeks, focused on the privacy engineering and data-lifecycle domains that dominate the exam.

Can you take the CDPSE exam online?+

Yes. ISACA offers CDPSE through remote online proctoring as well as at in-person test centers, so you can choose the option that suits you. The online exam requires a private, quiet room, a clear workspace, a webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and government-issued photo ID, with a proctor monitoring you and a room scan before you start.

If you do not pass, ISACA lets you retake the exam, with a limited number of attempts allowed per rolling twelve-month period — check the current policy before rebooking.

What certification should you take after the CDPSE?+

After CDPSE, common next steps include ISACA’s CISM or CRISC for broader security and risk management, or deeper privacy specializations, depending on your focus.

For many, the real next step is owning privacy engineering for a product or platform. Pairing CDPSE with hands-on implementation is what turns the certificate into a career.
