ACE frequently asked questions
What is the ACE certification?+
Google positions the Associate Cloud Engineer as validating the ability to deploy applications, monitor operations, and manage enterprise solutions on Google Cloud. It expects familiarity with Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Run, Cloud Storage, VPC networking, and Cloud IAM, driven through the Console and gcloud.
It is a practitioner exam: you are expected to know how Google Cloud services behave and how to configure them — creating a VM, granting an IAM role at the right level, setting up a load balancer — rather than only recognising what a service does.
What topics are on the ACE exam?+
The ACE exam is organised into four sections. The percentages below are the approximate weightings published in Google’s official exam guide, so bias your study toward the two ~30% sections — planning/implementing and ensuring operation — while still covering setup and security.
Setting up a cloud solution environment (20%)
Covers creating and managing projects, billing accounts, budgets and alerts, installing and configuring the gcloud CLI and Cloud SDK, enabling APIs, and working within the resource hierarchy of organization, folders, and projects.
Planning and implementing a cloud solution (30%)
The build section. It spans compute (Compute Engine VMs, instance groups and autoscaling, GKE, Cloud Run, App Engine, Cloud Functions), storage and databases (Cloud Storage classes and lifecycle, Cloud SQL, Firestore, BigQuery), and networking (VPC networks, subnets, firewall rules, Cloud Load Balancing, Cloud DNS).
Ensuring successful operation of a cloud solution (30%)
Covers operating resources day to day across compute, storage, and networking using gcloud, the Console, and Cloud Shell, plus the Google Cloud operations suite — Cloud Monitoring metrics, dashboards, alerting policies and uptime checks, and Cloud Logging with log-based metrics.
Configuring access and security (20%)
Covers Cloud IAM — basic, predefined, and custom roles, members, and least privilege — service accounts and their keys and scopes, managing IAM policies at different levels of the resource hierarchy, and using audit logs.
Is the ACE hard?+
ACE is an approachable associate exam for people with hands-on Google Cloud experience, but it is broad: it spans compute, storage, networking, operations, and security, and it expects you to know the right gcloud commands and IAM behaviours, not just concepts.
The most effective preparation is hands-on practice in a Google Cloud project alongside scenario questions, so that choosing the right service and configuring IAM correctly become second nature.
How many questions are on the ACE exam and how long is it?+
The Associate Cloud Engineer exam runs for 2 hours and contains roughly 50 to 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions. It is delivered online with remote proctoring or at a test centre.
Our full-length practice mock uses a 55-question, 120-minute session so you can rehearse the real pacing before test day.
What score do you need to pass the ACE?+
Google does not publicly publish a passing score for the Associate Cloud Engineer exam, so we do not state one as fact. Because there is no published number, our practice mock uses a 70% threshold purely as a study checkpoint — aim comfortably above it and focus on consistent strength across all four sections.
How much does the ACE exam cost?+
The Associate Cloud Engineer exam costs 125 USD (plus tax where applicable). The certification is valid for three years and can be renewed with a shorter renewal exam. Everything on this hub is free.
Who should take the ACE?+
ACE is aimed at cloud engineers, systems administrators, and developers who deploy and operate applications on Google Cloud, as well as people moving to Google Cloud from another platform.
There are no formal prerequisites, but Google recommends around six months of hands-on experience with Google Cloud. Comfort with the Console, gcloud CLI, and basic networking and IAM concepts makes the exam far more manageable.
What jobs and salaries can the ACE lead to?+
ACE is relevant to roles such as cloud engineer, cloud administrator, DevOps engineer, and systems administrator, where deploying and operating Google Cloud workloads is part of the job. It is the foundation for Google’s professional-level certifications.
How much any certification moves compensation depends heavily on geography, seniority, and hands-on experience, so treat any single salary figure with caution. ACE is best viewed as a way to demonstrate practical Google Cloud skills rather than a guaranteed raise on its own.
How long does it take to study for the ACE?+
Candidates with Google Cloud experience often need four to eight weeks; those newer to the platform should plan for longer and spend time in a real project. The most efficient path is to learn the four sections while practising with gcloud and the Console, then shift to timed scenario practice.
A good rhythm is to study one section at a time and take its topic quiz immediately, then move to full-length mocks in the final stretch — reviewing every explanation, including for questions you answered correctly, because ACE distractors are built from plausible but incorrect Google Cloud choices. Use the per-domain results here to find your weakest area.
How should you prepare for the ACE?+
Study the four sections above and drill practice questions section by section. Every MockAPI question reveals a full explanation and tells you why each wrong answer is wrong — essential for an exam whose distractors are realistic Google Cloud misconfigurations. Read Google Cloud’s documentation alongside these questions.
When you can answer topic drills comfortably, move to a full-length timed mock to rehearse pacing, and pair this with hands-on practice in a Google Cloud project. Use the glossary to nail terminology, and treat our mock threshold as a checkpoint, not the official bar.
Can you take the ACE exam online?+
Yes. Google delivers the exam through its testing partner, so you can take it online with remote proctoring or at an onsite test centre. The online option requires a private, quiet room, a clear workspace, a webcam, a stable connection, and government-issued photo ID, with a proctor monitoring the session.
Retake rules require a 14-day wait before a second attempt, 60 days before a third, and 365 days before a fourth, and each attempt requires payment. Once you pass, the certification is valid for three years and can be renewed with a shorter renewal exam.
What certification should you take after the ACE?+
After ACE, common next steps are Google’s professional certifications — most directly the Professional Cloud Architect, and role-based tracks such as Professional Cloud Developer, Professional Cloud Network Engineer, or Professional Cloud Security Engineer.
Beyond Google’s own tracks, ACE pairs well with multi-cloud or specialty skills. Pairing any of these with hands-on Google Cloud experience is what turns a certificate into a career.
