CompTIA Linux+ (XK0-006) (XK0-006) practice exam & study guide

CompTIA Linux+ (XK0-006) is CompTIA’s vendor-neutral certification for Linux system administrators. It validates the ability to manage, troubleshoot, secure, and automate modern Linux systems — including cloud and container environments — from the command line.

XK0-006 is a hands-on, command-line-focused exam. Questions test how you administer, troubleshoot, secure, and automate Linux — including performance-based tasks — not just recall of commands.

This free hub gives you everything you need to prepare: a syllabus breakdown by exam domain, realistic scenario-style practice questions with teacher-style explanations, a glossary of the Linux administration concepts the exam relies on, and full-length timed mock exams that mirror the real testing experience.

XK0-006 frequently asked questions

What is the XK0-006 certification?+

CompTIA positions Linux+ for system administrators who configure, manage, and troubleshoot Linux servers across on-premises, cloud, and container environments.

XK0-006 is the current update, refreshed around automation, security, containers, and infrastructure-as-code alongside core administration.

What topics are on the XK0-006 exam?+

The XK0-006 exam is organised into five weighted domains. The percentages below are CompTIA’s official weightings for scored content, so bias your study toward the heavier domains — System Management and Troubleshooting lead.

System Management (23%)

The largest domain. Covers managing software and packages, storage (partitions, filesystems, LVM, mounts), processes/services/boot with systemd and GRUB2, and the kernel, time, virtualization, and container basics.

Troubleshooting (22%)

Covers diagnosing storage and filesystem issues, network connectivity and name resolution, CPU/memory/process problems, and boot/service/hardware failures using system tools and logs.

Services and User Management (20%)

Covers managing users, groups, and permissions (including sudo and ACLs), configuring common services (SSH, DNS, web, file sharing, containers), networking and firewalls, and scheduling and logging.

Security (18%)

Covers access control and hardening (SELinux/AppArmor, PAM, permissions), authentication and identity (SSH keys, PKI, certificates), firewalls and auditing, and encryption (LUKS, GPG).

Automation, Orchestration, and Scripting (17%)

Covers writing and troubleshooting Bash scripts, version control (Git) and CI/CD basics, infrastructure as code and configuration management (Ansible), and orchestrating containers and workloads.

Is the XK0-006 hard?+

Linux+ is an intermediate exam that expects genuine command-line fluency and troubleshooting skill, including performance-based tasks — not just recognition of commands.

The difficulty comes from the breadth across administration, troubleshooting, security, and automation. Practising in a real Linux shell is the key.

How many questions are on the XK0-006 exam and how long is it?+

CompTIA Linux+ presents a maximum of 90 questions — a mix of multiple-choice and performance-based — in 90 minutes.

Our full-length practice mock uses a 75-question, 90-minute session so you can rehearse pacing under realistic time pressure before test day.

What score do you need to pass the XK0-006?+

CompTIA scores XK0-006 on a scale of 100 to 900, and you need 720 to pass — well above a simple 70%, so it leaves little room for weak areas. Because it is scaled, questions are not all worth the same, and there is no penalty for guessing, so answer everything. Our practice mock uses an 80% threshold as a study checkpoint; aim comfortably beyond it before test day.

How much does the XK0-006 exam cost?+

The XK0-006 exam fee is set by CompTIA and varies by region — check the CompTIA site for current pricing. CompTIA certifications are valid for three years and can be renewed through continuing education. Everything on this hub is free.

Who should take the XK0-006?+

Linux+ is aimed at Linux system administrators, DevOps and cloud engineers, and technical-support professionals who work on Linux servers.

CompTIA recommends around 12 months of hands-on Linux administration experience, though there is no formal prerequisite.

What jobs and salaries can the XK0-006 lead to?+

Linux+ maps to roles such as Linux administrator, systems administrator, DevOps engineer, and cloud/support engineer working on Linux.

How much any certification affects pay depends heavily on geography, seniority, and hands-on experience, so treat any single salary figure with caution. Linux+ is best viewed as validation of practical Linux administration skill.

How long does it take to study for the XK0-006?+

Candidates with some Linux experience often need six to ten weeks. The most efficient path is to study each domain while doing everything hands-on in a Linux shell.

Review every explanation, including for questions you answered correctly, because Linux+ distractors are built from plausible but incorrect commands and configurations. Use the per-domain results here to find and shore up your weakest area, then finish with full-length timed mocks.

How should you prepare for the XK0-006?+

Study the five domains above, giving the heaviest weight to System Management and Troubleshooting, then drill scenario questions domain by domain. Every MockAPI question reveals a full explanation and tells you why each wrong answer is wrong — essential for a command-line exam.

When you can answer scenarios comfortably, move to full-length timed mocks alongside real shell practice. Use the glossary to keep concepts like systemd, LVM, SELinux, and Ansible straight, and aim to score consistently above the checkpoint before you book.

Can you take the XK0-006 exam online?+

Yes. CompTIA delivers XK0-006 through Pearson VUE, so you can test at a physical Pearson VUE centre or online with remote proctoring. The online exam requires a private, quiet room, a clear workspace, a webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and government-issued photo ID, with a proctor monitoring you and a room scan before you start.

If you do not pass, CompTIA lets you retake immediately once; a 14-day wait applies before a third and any subsequent attempts.

What certification should you take after the XK0-006?+

After Linux+, common next steps include cloud certifications (AWS, Azure), containers/Kubernetes (KCNA/CKA), or CompTIA’s security track to build on the Linux foundation.

For many, the real next step is administering Linux fleets in production. Pairing Linux+ with hands-on shell experience is what turns the certificate into a career.
