SC-100 frequently asked questions
What is the SC-100 certification?+
Microsoft positions the Cybersecurity Architect as translating a security strategy into capabilities that protect an organization, designing solutions that follow Zero Trust and best practices across identity, devices, data, AI, applications, network, infrastructure, and DevOps.
It is an expert credential that expects prior experience across security domains and design-level judgment using the Microsoft Cybersecurity Reference Architectures, Cloud Security Benchmark, and Zero Trust and Cloud Adoption frameworks.
What topics are on the SC-100 exam?+
The SC-100 exam is organised into four weighted domains. The percentages below are the midpoints of Microsoft’s published ranges, normalized to total 100. Security operations/identity/compliance and infrastructure carry the most weight.
Design solutions that align with security best practices and priorities (22%)
Covers designing a resiliency strategy for ransomware and attacks (BCDR, secure backup/restore, privileged access), and designing solutions aligned with the Microsoft Cybersecurity Reference Architectures (MCRA), Cloud Security Benchmark (MCSB), Zero Trust adoption framework, and the Cloud Adoption and Well-Architected Frameworks.
Design security operations, identity, and compliance capabilities (28%)
One of the two heaviest domains. It covers designing security operations (XDR + SIEM, SOAR with Sentinel and Defender XDR, MITRE ATT&CK coverage), identity and access management, securing privileged access (enterprise access model, PIM), and regulatory compliance with Microsoft Purview and Azure Policy.
Design security solutions for infrastructure (28%)
One of the two heaviest domains. It covers security posture management for hybrid and multicloud (Defender for Cloud, Secure Score, Azure Arc, Defender EASM, Exposure Management), securing server and client endpoints, securing SaaS/PaaS/IaaS and containers, and network security with Security Service Edge.
Design security solutions for applications and data (22%)
Covers securing Microsoft 365 (Secure Score, Defender for Office 365 and Cloud Apps, Intune, Purview, Copilot controls), securing applications (threat modeling, secure development lifecycle, API security, Azure WAF), and securing data (discovery and classification, encryption with Key Vault, Defender for Storage and Databases).
Is the SC-100 hard?+
SC-100 is an expert-level design exam and a clear step above the associate security exams. It rarely asks for a single fact; it presents organizational requirements and asks you to choose the best architecture, often as multi-question case studies.
The difficulty is breadth plus judgment: you must know enough across identity, infrastructure, apps, and data to design coherent Zero Trust solutions under constraints. Microsoft recommends prior expert skill in at least one security area, and case-study practice is essential.
How many questions are on the SC-100 exam and how long is it?+
Microsoft does not fix a single public question count for SC-100; it typically presents roughly 40–60 questions in a mix of formats — multiple choice, multiple response, and case studies that group several questions around one scenario — with about 120 minutes of working time.
Our full-length practice mock uses a 60-question, 120-minute session so you can rehearse pacing under realistic time pressure before test day.
What score do you need to pass the SC-100?+
Microsoft scores SC-100 on a scale of 1 to 1,000, and the passing score is 700. That is a scaled score rather than a raw 70%, because Microsoft adjusts for question difficulty, and there is no penalty for wrong answers, so you should never leave a question blank. Our practice mock uses a 70% threshold to give you a comparable target.
How much does the SC-100 exam cost?+
The SC-100 exam fee is set by Microsoft and varies by region — check the Microsoft certification page for current pricing. Microsoft expert certifications are valid for one year and can be renewed for free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Everything on this hub is free.
Who should take the SC-100?+
SC-100 is aimed at cybersecurity architects and senior security professionals who design and guide the implementation of security strategy across an organization.
Microsoft recommends prior experience across identity and access, platform protection, security operations, data and AI security, application security, and hybrid/multicloud infrastructure, with expert skill in at least one area. Earning the certification also requires holding one of the associate security certifications — SC-200, SC-300, or AZ-500 — before you pass SC-100.
What jobs and salaries can the SC-100 lead to?+
SC-100 maps to senior roles such as cybersecurity architect, security lead, and principal security engineer, where designing an organization’s security strategy is central. As an expert credential it is one of Microsoft’s most senior security certifications.
How much any certification moves compensation depends heavily on geography, seniority, and hands-on experience, so treat any single salary figure with caution. SC-100 is best viewed as validation of architecture-level security skill rather than a guaranteed raise on its own.
How long does it take to study for the SC-100?+
Candidates who already hold an associate security cert often need eight to twelve weeks; those newer to architecture should plan longer. The most efficient path is to study each design area, then drill scenario and case-study questions that force trade-off decisions rather than recall.
Spend the majority of your time on full-length, case-study-style mocks in the final stretch, reviewing every explanation — including for questions you answered correctly — because SC-100 distractors are usually valid security options that simply do not best fit the stated requirements. Use the per-domain results here to find your weakest area.
How should you prepare for the SC-100?+
Study the four domains above, giving the most time to security operations/identity/compliance and infrastructure, then drill scenario questions domain by domain and work through case studies. Every MockAPI question reveals a full explanation and tells you why each wrong answer is wrong — essential when the wrong options are plausible designs.
When you can justify your choices comfortably, move to full-length timed mocks, including case studies, to rehearse pacing and requirement-parsing. Use the glossary to keep frameworks and services straight, and aim to score consistently above the pass mark before you book.
Can you take the SC-100 exam online?+
Yes. Microsoft delivers SC-100 through Pearson VUE, so you can test at a physical Pearson VUE centre or online with remote proctoring (OnVUE). The online exam requires a private, quiet room, a clear workspace, a webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and government-issued photo ID, with a proctor monitoring you and a room scan before you start.
If you do not pass, Microsoft requires a 24-hour wait before a second attempt; after that, a 14-day wait applies between further attempts, with a limit of five attempts in a 12-month period, and each attempt needs its own registration. Once you pass, the certification is renewable for free on Microsoft Learn.
What certification should you take after the SC-100?+
SC-100 is a capstone security credential; after it, architects often deepen into specific areas with SC-200, SC-300, or AZ-500, or broaden into the Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305).
For many, the real next step is leading security architecture on larger programs. Pairing SC-100 with hands-on security experience is what turns the certificate into a career.
