PL-300 frequently asked questions
What is the PL-300 certification?+
Microsoft positions PL-300 as validating the skills of a data analyst who delivers actionable insights — preparing and modeling data, building visualizations, enabling self-service analytics, and securing content.
It expects proficiency with Power Query and DAX, and covers the full Power BI workflow from connecting to data through row-level security and sensitivity labels, including AI-assisted authoring with Copilot in Power BI.
What topics are on the PL-300 exam?+
The PL-300 exam is organised into four weighted domains. The percentages below are the midpoints of Microsoft’s published ranges, normalized to total 100. The first three domains — prepare, model, and visualize — carry roughly equal, leading weight.
Prepare the data (27%)
Covers connecting to data sources and shared semantic models, choosing between DirectLake, DirectQuery, and Import, profiling and cleaning data, and transforming and loading data with Power Query — column types, pivot/unpivot, merge/append, and building fact and dimension tables.
Model the data (27%)
Covers designing a data model (table and column properties, role-playing dimensions, relationships, a common date table), creating DAX calculations (aggregations, CALCULATE, time intelligence, calculation groups), and optimizing model performance with Performance Analyzer and reduced granularity.
Visualize and analyze the data (27%)
Covers creating reports (selecting and formatting visuals, Copilot narrative visuals and report pages, themes, conditional formatting), enhancing reports (bookmarks, tooltips, interactions, navigation, drillthrough, mobile, accessibility), and identifying patterns with AI visuals, forecasting, and anomaly detection.
Manage and secure Power BI (19%)
The smallest domain. It covers creating and managing workspaces and assets (apps, dashboards, distribution, subscriptions, gateways, scheduled refresh) and securing and governing content with workspace roles, item-level access, row-level security, and sensitivity labels.
Is the PL-300 hard?+
PL-300 is an associate exam that expects genuine hands-on skill with Power Query and DAX, not just familiarity with the Power BI interface. Modeling and DAX questions in particular reward practice.
The difficulty comes from applying DAX correctly under a scenario’s filter context, choosing the right storage mode and model design, and knowing the governance features. Practising realistic modeling and report scenarios is the key.
How many questions are on the PL-300 exam and how long is it?+
Microsoft does not fix a single public question count for PL-300; it typically presents roughly 40–60 questions in a mix of formats — multiple choice, multiple response, and case studies, sometimes with a lab — within about 100 minutes of working time.
Our full-length practice mock uses a 60-question, 100-minute session so you can rehearse pacing under realistic time pressure before test day.
What score do you need to pass the PL-300?+
Microsoft scores PL-300 on a scale of 1 to 1,000, and the passing score is 700. That is a scaled score rather than a raw 70%, because Microsoft adjusts for question difficulty, and there is no penalty for wrong answers, so you should never leave a question blank. Our practice mock uses a 70% threshold to give you a comparable target.
How much does the PL-300 exam cost?+
The PL-300 exam fee is set by Microsoft and varies by region — check the Microsoft certification page for current pricing. Microsoft associate certifications are valid for one year and can be renewed for free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Everything on this hub is free.
Who should take the PL-300?+
PL-300 is aimed at data analysts and business-intelligence professionals who build reports and enable self-service analytics with Power BI, and at analysts moving from Excel to Power BI.
Microsoft recommends proficiency with Power Query and DAX and familiarity with working alongside data engineers and business stakeholders, though there is no formal prerequisite.
What jobs and salaries can the PL-300 lead to?+
PL-300 maps to roles such as data analyst, business-intelligence analyst, and reporting analyst, where turning data into insights with Power BI is the core of the job.
How much any certification affects pay depends heavily on geography, seniority, and hands-on experience, so treat any single salary figure with caution. PL-300 is best viewed as validation of Power BI analyst skill rather than a guaranteed raise on its own.
How long does it take to study for the PL-300?+
Candidates with Power BI experience often need four to eight weeks; those newer to Power Query and DAX should plan longer. The most efficient path is to study each domain while building a model and report in Power BI Desktop, drilling DAX as you go.
Review every explanation, including for questions you answered correctly, because PL-300 distractors are built from plausible but incorrect transforms, DAX, or model choices. Use the per-domain results here to find and shore up your weakest area, then finish with full-length timed mocks.
How should you prepare for the PL-300?+
Study the four domains above, giving balanced time to prepare, model, and visualize, then drill scenario questions domain by domain. Every MockAPI question reveals a full explanation and tells you why each wrong answer is wrong — essential for an exam that turns on exact Power Query and DAX behavior.
When you can answer scenarios comfortably, move to full-length timed mocks, ideally alongside hands-on practice in Power BI Desktop. Use the glossary to keep the concepts straight, and aim to score consistently above the pass mark before you book.
Can you take the PL-300 exam online?+
Yes. Microsoft delivers PL-300 through Pearson VUE, so you can test at a physical Pearson VUE centre or online with remote proctoring (OnVUE). The online exam requires a private, quiet room, a clear workspace, a webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and government-issued photo ID, with a proctor monitoring you and a room scan before you start.
If you do not pass, Microsoft requires a 24-hour wait before a second attempt; after that, a 14-day wait applies between further attempts, with a limit of five attempts in a 12-month period, and each attempt needs its own registration.
What certification should you take after the PL-300?+
After PL-300, common next steps include the Fabric Analytics Engineer (DP-600) or Fabric Data Engineer (DP-700) for deeper data-platform skills, or the Power Platform certifications for broader low-code work.
For many, the real next step is owning analytics for a team. Pairing PL-300 with hands-on Power BI experience is what turns the certificate into a career.
