Microsoft Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate (DP-600) practice exam & study guide

The Microsoft Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate (DP-600) is Microsoft’s associate certification for implementing analytics solutions with Microsoft Fabric. It validates the ability to maintain a data analytics solution, prepare data, and implement and manage semantic models using SQL, KQL, and DAX.

DP-600 is a hands-on, scenario-driven exam for analytics engineers on Microsoft Fabric. Questions test how you prepare data in lakehouses and warehouses and build and optimize semantic models, not just what the features are.

This free hub gives you everything you need to prepare: a syllabus breakdown by exam domain, realistic scenario-style practice questions with teacher-style explanations, a glossary of the Microsoft Fabric concepts the exam relies on, and full-length timed mock exams that mirror the real testing experience.

DP-600 frequently asked questions

What is the DP-600 certification?+

Microsoft positions the Fabric Analytics Engineer as designing, creating, and managing analytical assets — semantic models, warehouses, and lakehouses — and preparing and enriching data for analysis.

It expects proficiency querying with SQL, KQL, and DAX, and covers the analytics lifecycle, data preparation, and semantic-model design and optimization on Microsoft Fabric and OneLake.

What topics are on the DP-600 exam?+

The DP-600 exam is organised into three weighted domains. The percentages below are the midpoints of Microsoft’s published ranges, normalized to total 100. Preparing data is by far the largest area, at nearly half the exam.

Maintain a data analytics solution (27%)

Covers implementing security and governance (workspace and item access, row/column/object/file-level access, sensitivity labels, endorsement) and maintaining the analytics development lifecycle (version control, Power BI Desktop projects, deployment pipelines, impact analysis, the XMLA endpoint, and reusable assets).

Prepare data (46%)

The largest domain — nearly half the exam. It covers getting data (connections, OneLake catalog, choosing data stores, OneLake integration), transforming data (views, star schemas, denormalizing, aggregating, merging, cleaning), and querying and analyzing data with the Visual Query Editor, SQL, KQL, and DAX.

Implement and manage semantic models (27%)

Covers designing and building semantic models (storage mode, star schema, relationships, DAX with iterators and windowing, calculation groups, composite models) and optimizing enterprise-scale models (query and DAX performance, Direct Lake configuration, incremental refresh).

Is the DP-600 hard?+

DP-600 is an associate exam that expects genuine skill across data preparation and modeling in Fabric, plus fluency in SQL, KQL, and DAX — not just familiarity with the Fabric interface.

The difficulty comes from the breadth of Fabric (lakehouse, warehouse, semantic models) and from scenario questions that hinge on the right transform, model design, or Direct Lake choice. Practising in a Fabric workspace is the key.

How many questions are on the DP-600 exam and how long is it?+

Microsoft does not fix a single public question count for DP-600; it typically presents roughly 40–60 questions in a mix of formats — multiple choice, multiple response, and case studies, sometimes with a lab — within about 100 minutes of working time.

Our full-length practice mock uses a 60-question, 100-minute session so you can rehearse pacing under realistic time pressure before test day.

What score do you need to pass the DP-600?+

Microsoft scores DP-600 on a scale of 1 to 1,000, and the passing score is 700. That is a scaled score rather than a raw 70%, because Microsoft adjusts for question difficulty, and there is no penalty for wrong answers, so you should never leave a question blank. Our practice mock uses a 70% threshold to give you a comparable target.

How much does the DP-600 exam cost?+

The DP-600 exam fee is set by Microsoft and varies by region — check the Microsoft certification page for current pricing. Microsoft associate certifications are valid for one year and can be renewed for free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Everything on this hub is free.

Who should take the DP-600?+

DP-600 is aimed at analytics engineers and BI professionals who build analytical assets on Microsoft Fabric, and at data analysts moving into engineering.

Microsoft recommends experience designing and managing semantic models, warehouses, and lakehouses, plus proficiency with SQL, KQL, and DAX, though there is no formal prerequisite.

What jobs and salaries can the DP-600 lead to?+

DP-600 maps to roles such as analytics engineer, BI developer, and data analyst working in Microsoft Fabric, where preparing data and building semantic models is central to the job.

How much any certification affects pay depends heavily on geography, seniority, and hands-on experience, so treat any single salary figure with caution. DP-600 is best viewed as validation of Fabric analytics-engineering skill rather than a guaranteed raise on its own.

How long does it take to study for the DP-600?+

Candidates with Fabric or Power BI experience often need four to eight weeks; those newer to Fabric should plan longer. The most efficient path is to study each domain while building a lakehouse and semantic model in a Fabric workspace, drilling DAX and SQL as you go.

Review every explanation, including for questions you answered correctly, because DP-600 distractors are built from plausible but incorrect Fabric choices. Use the per-domain results here to find and shore up your weakest area, then finish with full-length timed mocks.

How should you prepare for the DP-600?+

Study the three domains above, giving the most time to preparing data, then drill scenario questions domain by domain. Every MockAPI question reveals a full explanation and tells you why each wrong answer is wrong — essential for an exam that turns on exact Fabric transforms and model designs.

When you can answer scenarios comfortably, move to full-length timed mocks, ideally alongside hands-on practice in Microsoft Fabric. Use the glossary to keep the concepts straight, and aim to score consistently above the pass mark before you book.

Can you take the DP-600 exam online?+

Yes. Microsoft delivers DP-600 through Pearson VUE, so you can test at a physical Pearson VUE centre or online with remote proctoring (OnVUE). The online exam requires a private, quiet room, a clear workspace, a webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and government-issued photo ID, with a proctor monitoring you and a room scan before you start.

If you do not pass, Microsoft requires a 24-hour wait before a second attempt; after that, a 14-day wait applies between further attempts, with a limit of five attempts in a 12-month period, and each attempt needs its own registration.

What certification should you take after the DP-600?+

After DP-600, common next steps include the Fabric Data Engineer (DP-700) for deeper data-engineering skills, or the Power BI Data Analyst (PL-300) for a reporting focus.

For many, the real next step is owning analytics solutions on Fabric. Pairing DP-600 with hands-on experience is what turns the certificate into a career.
