DP-300 frequently asked questions
What is the DP-300 certification?+
Microsoft positions the Azure Database Administrator as managing cloud and on-premises databases built on Azure SQL services and SQL Server, handling management, availability, security, and performance using T-SQL and automation.
It expects experience with Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure VMs, and SQL Server on-premises, and covers deployment, security, monitoring and optimization, automation, and HA/DR.
What topics are on the DP-300 exam?+
The DP-300 exam is organised into five weighted domains. The percentages below are the midpoints of Microsoft’s published ranges, normalized to total 100. Security, optimization, and HA/DR carry the most weight.
Plan and implement data platform resources (17%)
Covers planning and deploying Azure SQL solutions (recommending an offering, automated deployment, Arc-enabled SQL, SQL in Fabric, partitioning, sharding), configuring resources for scale and performance, and planning and implementing online and offline migration strategies.
Implement a secure environment (23%)
Covers configuring authentication and authorization (Microsoft Entra ID authentication, least privilege, T-SQL), security for data at rest and in transit (TDE, Always Encrypted, firewall rules, private links), and compliance controls (classification, audits, dynamic data masking, ledger, row-level security).
Monitor, configure, and optimize database resources (23%)
Covers monitoring resource activity and performance (baselines, database watcher, Extended Events), monitoring and optimizing query performance (Query Store, DMVs, execution plans, Intelligent Insights), and configuring databases for optimal performance (index/statistics maintenance, automatic tuning, Resource Governor, IQP).
Configure and manage automation of tasks (17%)
Covers creating and managing SQL Server Agent jobs (schedules, alerts, notifications), automating deployment with ARM/Bicep, Azure PowerShell, and Azure CLI, and creating and managing database tasks in Azure including elastic jobs.
Plan and configure a high availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR) environment (20%)
Covers planning an HA/DR strategy based on RPO/RTO, planning and performing backup and restore (native tools, point-in-time restore, long-term retention, T-SQL), and configuring HA/DR (active geo-replication, Always On availability groups, failover groups, Failover Cluster Instances, log shipping).
Is the DP-300 hard?+
DP-300 is an associate exam that expects genuine DBA skill — configuring security, tuning queries, and designing HA/DR — not just recognition of Azure SQL features. T-SQL and performance questions reward hands-on practice.
The difficulty comes from the breadth across Azure SQL flavors and SQL Server, and from scenario questions that hinge on the right security, tuning, or HA/DR choice. Practising realistic administration scenarios is the key.
How many questions are on the DP-300 exam and how long is it?+
Microsoft does not fix a single public question count for DP-300; it typically presents roughly 40–60 questions in a mix of formats — multiple choice, multiple response, and case studies, sometimes with a lab — within about 100 minutes of working time.
Our full-length practice mock uses a 60-question, 100-minute session so you can rehearse pacing under realistic time pressure before test day.
What score do you need to pass the DP-300?+
Microsoft scores DP-300 on a scale of 1 to 1,000, and the passing score is 700. That is a scaled score rather than a raw 70%, because Microsoft adjusts for question difficulty, and there is no penalty for wrong answers, so you should never leave a question blank. Our practice mock uses a 70% threshold to give you a comparable target.
How much does the DP-300 exam cost?+
The DP-300 exam fee is set by Microsoft and varies by region — check the Microsoft certification page for current pricing. Microsoft associate certifications are valid for one year and can be renewed for free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Everything on this hub is free.
Who should take the DP-300?+
DP-300 is aimed at database administrators and data professionals who manage Azure SQL and SQL Server databases, and at on-premises DBAs moving to Azure.
Microsoft recommends experience with Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure VMs and on-premises, and proficiency with T-SQL, though there is no formal prerequisite.
What jobs and salaries can the DP-300 lead to?+
DP-300 maps to roles such as database administrator, Azure data platform administrator, and data engineer with DBA duties, where operating Azure SQL and SQL Server is central to the job.
How much any certification affects pay depends heavily on geography, seniority, and hands-on experience, so treat any single salary figure with caution. DP-300 is best viewed as validation of Azure database-administration skill rather than a guaranteed raise on its own.
How long does it take to study for the DP-300?+
Candidates with SQL administration experience often need four to eight weeks; those newer to Azure SQL should plan longer. The most efficient path is to study each domain while practising in Azure SQL and SQL Server, drilling T-SQL as you go.
Review every explanation, including for questions you answered correctly, because DP-300 distractors are built from plausible but incorrect administration choices. Use the per-domain results here to find and shore up your weakest area, then finish with full-length timed mocks.
How should you prepare for the DP-300?+
Study the five domains above, giving the most time to security, optimization, and HA/DR, then drill scenario questions domain by domain. Every MockAPI question reveals a full explanation and tells you why each wrong answer is wrong — essential for an exam that turns on exact SQL administration decisions.
When you can answer scenarios comfortably, move to full-length timed mocks, ideally alongside hands-on practice in Azure SQL. Use the glossary to keep the concepts straight, and aim to score consistently above the pass mark before you book.
Can you take the DP-300 exam online?+
Yes. Microsoft delivers DP-300 through Pearson VUE, so you can test at a physical Pearson VUE centre or online with remote proctoring (OnVUE). The online exam requires a private, quiet room, a clear workspace, a webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and government-issued photo ID, with a proctor monitoring you and a room scan before you start.
If you do not pass, Microsoft requires a 24-hour wait before a second attempt; after that, a 14-day wait applies between further attempts, with a limit of five attempts in a 12-month period, and each attempt needs its own registration.
What certification should you take after the DP-300?+
After DP-300, common next steps include the Fabric Data Engineer (DP-700) or the Azure Data Fundamentals-to-engineering path, or broadening into the Azure Solutions Architect track.
For many, the real next step is owning production databases at scale. Pairing DP-300 with hands-on Azure SQL experience is what turns the certificate into a career.
