AI-901 frequently asked questions
What is the AI-901 certification?+
Microsoft positions AI-901 for candidates at the beginning of a career in AI solution development, with conceptual knowledge of Azure AI plus foundational technical skills.
It replaces AI-900 (retired June 30, 2026) and adds an implementation half built on Microsoft Foundry, so some Python and Azure familiarity is expected alongside the conceptual material.
What topics are on the AI-901 exam?+
The AI-901 exam is organised into two weighted domains. The percentages below are the midpoints of Microsoft’s published ranges (40–45% and 55–60%), normalized to total 100, so treat them as a study-time guide. The Foundry implementation domain carries the most weight.
Identify AI concepts and capabilities (43%)
Covers the principles of responsible AI (fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency, accountability), identifying AI model components and configurations, and identifying AI workloads including generative and agentic AI, text analysis, speech, computer vision, and information extraction.
Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry (57%)
The larger domain. Covers implementing generative AI apps and agents (prompts, model deployment, Foundry SDK chat and agent clients), text and speech solutions, computer vision and image-generation solutions, and information extraction with Azure Content Understanding — all as lightweight applications built in Foundry.
Is the AI-901 hard?+
AI-901 is a fundamentals exam, so the concepts are approachable, but the updated version adds implementation tasks that expect you to have actually built something in Microsoft Foundry.
The main challenge is the breadth across all AI workloads plus the hands-on Foundry half. Some Python and Azure familiarity makes the implementation questions much easier.
How many questions are on the AI-901 exam and how long is it?+
Microsoft does not fix a single public question count for AI-901; fundamentals exams typically present roughly 40–60 questions in a mix of formats — multiple choice and multiple response — with about 45 minutes of working time.
Our full-length practice mock uses a 60-question, 45-minute session so you can rehearse pacing under realistic time pressure before test day.
What score do you need to pass the AI-901?+
Microsoft scores AI-901 on a scale of 1 to 1,000, and the passing score is 700. That is a scaled score rather than a raw 70%, because Microsoft adjusts for question difficulty, and there is no penalty for wrong answers, so you should never leave a question blank. Our practice mock uses a 70% threshold to give you a comparable target.
How much does the AI-901 exam cost?+
The AI-901 exam fee is set by Microsoft and varies by region — check the Microsoft certification page for current pricing, and note that fundamentals exams are typically lower-cost. Microsoft fundamentals certifications do not expire. Everything on this hub is free.
Who should take the AI-901?+
AI-901 is aimed at people beginning a career in AI on Azure — aspiring AI engineers, developers, and technical professionals — as well as anyone moving from the retired AI-900 to the current exam.
Microsoft recommends conceptual knowledge of Azure AI plus foundational technical skills, including some Python and familiarity with Azure resources, though there is no formal prerequisite.
What jobs and salaries can the AI-901 lead to?+
AI-901 is a foundation for AI-focused roles and a stepping stone toward associate certifications such as the Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer (AI-103).
How much any certification affects pay depends heavily on geography, seniority, and hands-on experience, so treat any single salary figure with caution. As a fundamentals credential, AI-901 is best viewed as validation of foundational AI skill.
How long does it take to study for the AI-901?+
Many candidates prepare for AI-901 in two to four weeks, less with prior Azure or AI experience. The most efficient path is to study each domain while building the lightweight solutions in a Microsoft Foundry project.
Review every explanation, including for questions you answered correctly, because fundamentals distractors are built from plausible but incorrect statements. Use the per-domain results here to find and shore up your weakest area, then finish with full-length timed mocks.
How should you prepare for the AI-901?+
Study the two domains above, giving the heaviest weight to the Foundry implementation domain, then drill questions domain by domain. Every MockAPI question reveals a full explanation and tells you why each wrong answer is wrong — essential even for a fundamentals exam.
When you can answer questions comfortably, move to full-length timed mocks alongside hands-on Foundry practice. Use the glossary to keep concepts like responsible AI, multimodal models, and Content Understanding straight, and aim to score consistently above the pass mark before you book.
Can you take the AI-901 exam online?+
Yes. Microsoft delivers AI-901 through Pearson VUE, so you can test at a physical Pearson VUE centre or online with remote proctoring (OnVUE). The online exam requires a private, quiet room, a clear workspace, a webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and government-issued photo ID, with a proctor monitoring you and a room scan before you start.
If you do not pass, Microsoft requires a 24-hour wait before a second attempt; after that, a 14-day wait applies between further attempts, with a limit of five attempts in a 12-month period, and each attempt needs its own registration.
What certification should you take after the AI-901?+
After AI-901, common next steps include the Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer (AI-103) for building AI apps and agents, or the Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) and Data Fundamentals (DP-900) to round out cloud foundations.
For many, the real next step is building AI solutions on Azure. Pairing AI-901 with hands-on Foundry practice is what turns the certificate into a career.
