SOA-C03 frequently asked questions
What is the SOA-C03 certification?+
AWS positions the CloudOps Engineer - Associate as validating the ability to deploy, manage, and operate workloads on AWS, with an emphasis on monitoring, automation, reliability, and operational excellence.
SOA-C03 rebalances the previous exam into five domains and broadens the first domain to include performance optimization. It rewards knowing how AWS services behave in production rather than pure theory.
What topics are on the SOA-C03 exam?+
The SOA-C03 exam is organised into five weighted domains. The percentages below are AWS’s official weightings for scored content. The first three domains — monitoring, reliability, and deployment — each carry equal, leading weight.
Monitoring, Logging, Analysis, Remediation, and Performance Optimization (22%)
One of the three heaviest domains. It covers Amazon CloudWatch metrics, dashboards, alarms, and Logs, EventBridge and the CloudWatch agent, automated remediation with Lambda and Systems Manager, and optimizing performance across compute, storage, database, and network.
Reliability and Business Continuity (22%)
Covers EC2 Auto Scaling and Elastic Load Balancing, Multi-AZ high availability and Route 53 health checks, and backup and restore with AWS Backup and snapshots to meet recovery objectives, including cross-Region disaster recovery.
Deployment, Provisioning, and Automation (22%)
Covers provisioning resources with AMIs, EC2, and RDS, infrastructure as code with AWS CloudFormation (stacks, stack sets, drift detection), and automating operations with AWS Systems Manager (Automation, Run Command, State Manager, Patch Manager, Parameter Store).
Security and Compliance (16%)
Covers IAM users, groups, roles, policies, and permission boundaries, AWS Organizations SCPs and IAM Access Analyzer, data and infrastructure protection with encryption, AWS KMS, and ACM, and compliance auditing with AWS Config, CloudTrail, and Security Hub.
Networking and Content Delivery (18%)
Covers VPC configuration and connectivity troubleshooting (subnets, route tables, gateways, security groups, NACLs), DNS with Amazon Route 53, hybrid connectivity, and edge and content delivery with Amazon CloudFront and Elastic Load Balancing.
Is the SOA-C03 hard?+
SOA-C03 is an associate-level exam but is widely considered one of the more challenging associate certifications because it emphasises real operational behaviour rather than recall. Historically the SysOps track also featured hands-on labs; always check AWS for the current exam format before you book.
The difficulty comes from knowing exact service behaviour — how an alarm triggers remediation, how a backup restores, how a networking misconfiguration is diagnosed — across a broad surface. Practising scenario questions until those distinctions are automatic is the key.
How many questions are on the SOA-C03 exam and how long is it?+
The live SOA-C03 exam contains 65 questions to be answered in 130 minutes — 50 scored plus 15 unscored questions AWS uses to trial future content — delivered as multiple-choice and multiple-response items. Our full-length practice mock mirrors the length and timing with a 65-question, 130-minute timer.
Expect scenario stems that describe an operational problem and ask for the AWS service, configuration, or automation that best resolves it.
What score do you need to pass the SOA-C03?+
AWS scores SOA-C03 on a scaled range of 100 to 1,000, and you need 720 to pass. The score is scaled rather than a simple percentage, and there are no per-domain pass marks — you need an overall 720. Our practice mock flags a pass at 72% to give you a comparable target.
How much does the SOA-C03 exam cost?+
The SOA-C03 exam costs 150 USD (prices vary by region), and the certification is valid for three years. Everything on this hub — questions, mock exams, glossary, and domain guides — is completely free.
Who should take the SOA-C03?+
The CloudOps Engineer - Associate is aimed at people who operate workloads on AWS — cloud operations engineers, systems administrators, and infrastructure engineers responsible for monitoring, automation, and reliability.
AWS recommends about one year of hands-on experience operating on AWS. The Cloud Practitioner is a helpful precursor, but there is no formal prerequisite.
What jobs and salaries can the SOA-C03 lead to?+
SOA-C03 is relevant to roles such as cloud operations engineer, systems administrator, and site reliability engineer, where running AWS workloads day to day is the job. It is a foundation for the DevOps Engineer - Professional track.
How much any certification moves compensation depends heavily on geography, seniority, and hands-on experience, so treat any single salary figure with caution. SOA-C03 is best viewed as validation of AWS operations skill rather than a guaranteed raise on its own.
How long does it take to study for the SOA-C03?+
Candidates with AWS operations experience often need four to eight weeks; those newer to AWS should plan for two to three months at roughly an hour a day. The most efficient path is to study each domain while practising in the console and CLI, then shift to timed scenario practice.
Review every explanation, including for questions you answered correctly, because SOA-C03 distractors are built from plausible but incorrect AWS configurations. Use the per-domain results here to find and shore up your weakest area, then finish with full-length timed mocks.
How should you prepare for the SOA-C03?+
Study the five domains above, giving balanced time to the three leading domains — monitoring, reliability, and deployment — then drill scenario questions domain by domain. Every MockAPI question reveals a full explanation and tells you why each wrong answer is wrong, which is essential for an operations exam built on realistic misconfigurations.
When you can answer topic drills comfortably, move to a full-length timed mock to rehearse pacing, and pair this with hands-on practice in the AWS console. Use the glossary to nail service behaviour, and aim to score consistently above the pass mark before you book.
Can you take the SOA-C03 exam online?+
Yes. AWS delivers SOA-C03 through Pearson VUE, both at test centers and online with remote proctoring (OnVUE). The online exam requires a private, quiet room, a clear workspace, a webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and government-issued photo ID, with a proctor monitoring you and a room scan before you start.
If you do not pass, AWS applies a 14-day waiting period before you can retake the exam, and each attempt needs its own registration and fee. There is no limit on lifetime attempts, but the waiting period applies between each.
What certification should you take after the SOA-C03?+
After SOA-C03, common next steps include the DevOps Engineer - Professional (DOP-C02), which builds directly on operations knowledge, or the Solutions Architect track for broader design skill.
For many, the real next step is operating larger AWS environments. Pairing SOA-C03 with hands-on operations experience is what turns the certificate into a career.
