AWS Certified SysOps Administrator - Associate (SOA-C02) practice exam & study guide

The AWS Certified SysOps Administrator - Associate (SOA-C02) is Amazon Web Services’ associate-level certification for operations. It validates the ability to deploy, manage, and operate workloads on AWS — monitoring and remediation, reliability and business continuity, provisioning and automation, security and compliance, networking, and cost and performance optimization.

SOA-C02 is the operations-focused member of the AWS associate trio (alongside Solutions Architect and Developer). It is hands-on and scenario-driven: questions describe an operational situation and ask which service, configuration, or automated response resolves it.

Note: AWS retired the SOA-C02 exam on 29 September 2025 and is transitioning this track to the CloudOps Engineer - Associate certification. The AWS operations skills this hub covers — monitoring, reliability, automation, security, networking, and cost/performance — remain directly relevant to the successor exam, but check AWS for the current exam before you book.

This free hub gives you everything you need to build those skills: a syllabus breakdown by exam domain, realistic scenario-style practice questions with teacher-style explanations, a glossary of the AWS operations services involved, and full-length timed mock exams.

SOA-C02 frequently asked questions

What is the SOA-C02 certification?+

AWS positions the SysOps Administrator - Associate as proof that you can deploy, manage, and operate workloads on AWS and implement operational best practices. It leans on CloudWatch, Systems Manager, CloudFormation, Auto Scaling, IAM, VPC networking, and the tools used to monitor, secure, and optimize running systems.

AWS suggests around a year of hands-on experience operating on AWS before attempting it. The exam rewards knowing how services behave in production — how an alarm triggers remediation, how a backup restores, how a networking misconfiguration is diagnosed — rather than pure theory.

What topics are on the SOA-C02 exam?+

The SOA-C02 exam is organised into six weighted domains. The percentages below are each domain’s share of scored content, so bias your study time toward the heavier domains — Monitoring and the Deployment/Networking domains carry the most weight.

Monitoring, Logging, and Remediation (20%)

The heaviest domain. It covers implementing metrics, alarms, and filters with Amazon CloudWatch and CloudWatch Logs, using EventBridge to route operational events, and remediating issues automatically — for example an alarm that triggers Auto Scaling, EC2 recovery, or a Systems Manager Automation runbook.

Reliability and Business Continuity (16%)

Covers keeping workloads available and recoverable. It spans scalability and elasticity with EC2 Auto Scaling and load balancing, high-availability multi-AZ designs with Route 53 health checks, and backup and restore strategies with AWS Backup and snapshots, including RTO and RPO.

Deployment, Provisioning, and Automation (18%)

Covers provisioning and maintaining resources with AMIs and AWS CloudFormation (stacks, stack sets, drift detection), and automating manual or repeatable processes with AWS Systems Manager (Automation, Run Command, State Manager, Patch Manager, Parameter Store).

Security and Compliance (16%)

Covers implementing and managing security and compliance — IAM users, groups, roles, and policies, Organizations service control policies, and auditing — plus data and infrastructure protection through encryption at rest and in transit with AWS KMS, ACM certificates, Secrets Manager, and edge protections.

Networking and Content Delivery (18%)

Covers implementing networking and connectivity (VPC, subnets, route tables, gateways, security groups, network ACLs, peering, Transit Gateway, VPN), configuring domains, DNS, and content delivery with Route 53 and CloudFront, and troubleshooting connectivity with tools such as VPC Flow Logs.

Cost and Performance Optimization (12%)

The smallest domain. It covers cost optimization with Cost Explorer, Budgets, right-sizing, Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, and S3 storage classes, and performance optimization through EBS volume selection, instance sizing, caching, and monitoring-driven tuning.

Is the SOA-C02 hard?+

SOA-C02 is a step up from the Cloud Practitioner and, like the other associate exams, is scenario-based. It has historically also included exam labs (hands-on tasks), so operational fluency — not just recognition — matters, and questions often hinge on how a service behaves under real conditions.

The difficulty comes from breadth across operations plus the need to know remediation and troubleshooting flows. The most effective preparation is heavy scenario practice so that responses — which alarm action, which backup strategy, which networking fix — become second nature.

How many questions are on the SOA-C02 exam and how long is it?+

The live SOA-C02 exam contains 65 questions to be answered in 130 minutes, delivered as multiple-choice and multiple-response items. A subset are unscored questions AWS uses to trial future content, but you cannot tell which, so answer every question with equal care.

You can sit the exam at a Pearson VUE test centre or through online proctoring from home. Our full-length practice mock mirrors this format with a 65-question, 130-minute timer so you can rehearse pacing — about two minutes per question — before test day.

What score do you need to pass the SOA-C02?+

AWS scores SOA-C02 on a scaled range of 100 to 1,000, and you need 720 to pass. The score is scaled rather than a simple percentage because question difficulty varies, and AWS does not publish per-domain pass marks — you need an overall 720, so a weaker domain can be offset by a stronger one. Our practice mock flags a pass at 72% to give you a comparable target.

How much does the SOA-C02 exam cost?+

The SOA-C02 exam costs 150 USD (prices vary slightly by region and currency), and the certification is valid for three years before it needs recertification. Everything on this hub — questions, mock exams, glossary, and domain guides — is completely free, so you can prepare thoroughly before paying to sit the exam.

Who should take the SOA-C02?+

The SysOps Administrator - Associate is aimed at people in a systems-administrator or operations role who deploy, manage, and operate workloads on AWS. AWS recommends around a year of hands-on operational experience, though it is also a common goal for administrators formalising cloud-operations skills.

It pairs naturally with the Solutions Architect - Associate for a design-plus-operations foundation, and is a natural next step from the Cloud Practitioner for those heading into cloud operations.

What jobs and salaries can the SOA-C02 lead to?+

The certification is relevant to roles such as cloud operations engineer, systems administrator, site reliability engineer, and cloud support engineer, where running and maintaining AWS workloads is part of the job.

How much any certification moves compensation depends heavily on geography, seniority, and hands-on experience, so treat any single salary figure with caution. SOA-C02 is best viewed as a way to demonstrate cloud-operations knowledge rather than a guaranteed raise on its own.

How long does it take to study for the SOA-C02?+

Candidates with AWS operations experience often need four to eight weeks; those newer to AWS should plan for two to three months at roughly an hour a day. The most efficient path is to learn the operational services domain by domain, then shift the majority of your time to timed scenario practice.

A good rhythm is to study one domain at a time and drill its topic quiz immediately, then move to mixed, full-length timed mocks in the final stretch — reviewing every explanation, including for questions you answered correctly, because SOA-C02 distractors are built from plausible but sub-optimal operational choices. Use the per-domain results here to find your weakest area and drill it again.

How should you prepare for the SOA-C02?+

Start by reading each domain above so you know where the marks are, then work the practice questions domain by domain. Every question on MockAPI reveals a full explanation and tells you why each wrong answer is wrong — that second part is where most of the learning happens on a scenario-based exam.

When you can answer topic drills comfortably, move to a full-length timed mock to rehearse pacing and stamina, and use the glossary to close any gaps in terminology. Aim to score consistently above the pass mark on mocks before you book the real thing.

Can you take the SOA-C02 exam online?+

Yes. You can sit SOA-C02 either at a Pearson VUE testing centre or online from home with OnVUE remote proctoring. For the online option you need a quiet, private room, a stable internet connection, a webcam, and government-issued photo ID; a proctor monitors the session, and you will be asked to show your surroundings before you begin.

If you do not pass, AWS lets you retake the exam after a 14-day waiting period, with no limit on attempts, though each attempt requires a new paid registration. Results are typically available within a few business days in your AWS Certification account, where you can also download your certificate and digital badge once you pass.

What certification should you take after the SOA-C02?+

The SysOps Administrator - Associate pairs naturally with the other associate exams — Solutions Architect - Associate (SAA-C03) and Developer - Associate (DVA-C02) — to round out design, development, and operations on AWS.

From the associate tier the natural progression for operations is the DevOps Engineer - Professional (SAP-C02’s operations counterpart), or specialty credentials such as Advanced Networking or Security. Pairing any of these with real hands-on operations experience is what turns a certificate into a career.
