AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional (SAP-C02) practice exam & study guide

The AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional (SAP-C02) is AWS’s professional-level certification for designing complex solutions on AWS. It validates the ability to design for organizational complexity, architect new solutions, continuously improve existing ones, and accelerate migration and modernization.

SAP-C02 is a professional exam and a significant step up from the associate tier — long, dense, and scenario-heavy, with questions spanning multi-account governance, networking, resilience, and migration.

This free hub gives you a syllabus breakdown by domain, realistic professional-level scenario questions with teacher-style explanations, a glossary of the AWS terminology the exam relies on, and full-length timed mock exams that mirror the real testing experience.

SAP-C02 frequently asked questions

What is the SAP-C02 certification?+

AWS positions the Solutions Architect - Professional as validating advanced skills in designing distributed, highly available, cost-optimized, and secure systems across complex organizations. It expects deep knowledge of Organizations, cross-account networking, DR strategies, and the 7 Rs of migration.

It is judgment-heavy: most questions present a long scenario with several valid options and ask for the best design given constraints. Broad, deep AWS experience is what the exam rewards.

What topics are on the SAP-C02 exam?+

The SAP-C02 exam is organised into four weighted domains. The percentages below are each domain’s share of scored content; Design for New Solutions and Organizational Complexity are the two heaviest.

Design Solutions for Organizational Complexity (26%)

Covers multi-account architectures with AWS Organizations, Control Tower, SCPs, and landing zones, cross-account and hybrid networking (Transit Gateway, PrivateLink, hybrid DNS), centralized identity and federation with IAM Identity Center, and organization-wide cost governance.

Design for New Solutions (29%)

The heaviest domain. It covers designing for reliability, high availability, and disaster recovery (RTO/RPO strategies), performance and elasticity across compute, storage, and databases, security architecture, and choosing services and deployment strategies for new workloads.

Continuous Improvement for Existing Solutions (25%)

Covers improving operational excellence and observability at scale, improving reliability, performance, and cost of existing workloads, strengthening security posture, and improving automation and CI/CD.

Accelerate Workload Migration and Modernization (20%)

Covers migration strategies (the 7 Rs), AWS migration tooling (MGN, DMS, DataSync, Snow), discovery and planning, large-scale data and database migration, and modernization toward containers and serverless.

Is the SAP-C02 hard?+

SAP-C02 is one of AWS’s hardest exams. It is professional level, the scenarios are long and multi-part, and several answers are usually defensible — you must pick the best design for the stated constraints under real time pressure.

The challenge is breadth and depth together, plus reading dense questions quickly. Extensive hands-on AWS experience and heavy scenario practice are the most effective preparation.

How many questions are on the SAP-C02 exam and how long is it?+

The live SAP-C02 exam contains 75 questions to be answered in 180 minutes, delivered as multiple-choice and multiple-response items, with a subset unscored. Our full-length practice mock mirrors this with a 75-question, 180-minute timer.

You can sit the exam at a Pearson VUE test centre or online with proctoring from home.

What score do you need to pass the SAP-C02?+

AWS scores SAP-C02 on a scaled range of 100 to 1,000, and you need 750 to pass. The score is scaled rather than a simple percentage, and there are no per-domain pass marks — you need an overall 750. Our practice mock flags a pass at 75% to give you a comparable target.

How much does the SAP-C02 exam cost?+

The SAP-C02 exam costs 300 USD (prices vary by region), and the certification is valid for three years. Everything on this hub — questions, mock exams, glossary, and domain guides — is completely free.

Who should take the SAP-C02?+

The Solutions Architect - Professional is aimed at experienced solutions architects and senior engineers who design across complex, multi-account AWS environments.

AWS recommends two or more years of hands-on experience designing and deploying on AWS. The Solutions Architect - Associate is a strong precursor, though not required.

What jobs and salaries can the SAP-C02 lead to?+

SAP-C02 is relevant to senior roles such as solutions architect, cloud architect, and principal engineer, where designing large-scale AWS systems is the job. It is one of the most respected AWS credentials.

How much any certification moves compensation depends heavily on geography, seniority, and experience, so treat any single salary figure with caution. SAP-C02 is best viewed as validation of advanced architecture skill rather than a guaranteed raise on its own.

How long does it take to study for the SAP-C02?+

Even experienced architects usually need two to three months of focused study given the exam’s breadth and depth. Learn the four domains, then commit heavily to full-length timed scenario practice to build reading speed and judgment.

A good rhythm is to study one domain at a time and drill its topic quiz immediately, then move to full-length mocks — reviewing every explanation, including for questions you answered correctly, because SAP-C02 distractors are built from plausible but sub-optimal designs.

How should you prepare for the SAP-C02?+

Study the four domains above, then drill practice questions domain by domain. Every MockAPI question reveals a full explanation and tells you why each wrong answer is wrong — essential on a professional exam of close design trade-offs.

When your domain scores are solid, sit full-length timed mocks to build the stamina the 180-minute exam demands. Use the glossary to nail terminology, and aim to score consistently above the pass mark before you book.

Can you take the SAP-C02 exam online?+

Yes. You can sit SAP-C02 at a Pearson VUE testing centre or online from home with OnVUE remote proctoring, which requires a quiet private room, a stable connection, a webcam, and government-issued photo ID.

If you do not pass, AWS lets you retake after a 14-day waiting period, with no limit on attempts, though each attempt requires a new paid registration. Results post to your AWS Certification account within a few business days.

What certification should you take after the SAP-C02?+

The Solutions Architect - Professional pairs naturally with the DevOps Engineer - Professional (DOP-C02) for the operations side, and with specialty certifications such as Security, Advanced Networking, or Machine Learning.

Pairing it with real design experience across large AWS environments is what turns the credential into senior-level capability.
