AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty (ANS-C01) practice exam & study guide

The AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty (ANS-C01) is AWS’s specialty certification for networking. It validates deep skills in designing, implementing, operating, and securing complex AWS and hybrid network architectures.

ANS-C01 is a specialty exam for networking-focused engineers. It is deep and scenario-driven, covering global and hybrid connectivity, DNS, load balancing, monitoring, and network security at scale.

Note: AWS has announced that the ANS-C01 exam is being retired, with the last day to test on 25 August 2026; certifications earned before then remain valid for the standard three-year period. The advanced AWS networking skills this hub covers — VPC design, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, DNS, and network security — remain relevant, but check AWS for the current networking certification path before you book.

This free hub gives you a syllabus breakdown by domain, realistic scenario questions with teacher-style explanations, a glossary of the AWS networking services the exam relies on, and full-length timed mock exams that mirror the real testing experience.

ANS-C01 frequently asked questions

What is the ANS-C01 certification?+

AWS positions the Advanced Networking - Specialty as validating expertise in designing and maintaining network architecture for the full breadth of AWS services, plus hybrid connectivity. It expects deep knowledge of VPC design, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, Route 53, and network security.

It is detail-heavy and judgment-based — you must know exactly how networking services behave (routing propagation, DNS resolution paths, VIF types) and choose the best design for a scenario.

What topics are on the ANS-C01 exam?+

The ANS-C01 exam is organised into four weighted domains. The percentages below are each domain’s share of scored content; Network Design is the heaviest, followed by Network Security and Implementation.

Network Design (30%)

The heaviest domain. It covers designing global and hybrid architectures across Regions, AZs, and edge, VPC design and IP addressing at scale (including IPv6), connectivity with Transit Gateway, PrivateLink, VPN, and Direct Connect, and DNS design with Route 53 including hybrid DNS.

Network Implementation (26%)

Covers implementing VPCs, subnets, route tables, and gateways, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect (VIFs, LAG) and Site-to-Site VPN, Route 53 hosted zones and resolver endpoints, and load balancing with ALB, NLB, and GWLB.

Network Management and Operation (20%)

Covers monitoring networks with VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch, Reachability Analyzer, and Network Manager, troubleshooting connectivity, routing, DNS, and performance, optimizing for performance and cost, and automating network operations.

Network Security, Compliance, and Governance (24%)

Covers securing traffic with security groups, NACLs, Network Firewall, WAF, and Shield, segmenting and inspecting traffic (including with Gateway Load Balancer), securing hybrid and cross-account connectivity and encryption in transit, and network governance and auditing.

Is the ANS-C01 hard?+

ANS-C01 is a demanding specialty exam. It expects precise knowledge of how AWS networking behaves — route propagation across Transit Gateway, hybrid DNS resolution, Direct Connect VIF types — not just service recognition.

The difficulty is depth across design, implementation, operations, and security, plus scenario judgment. Hands-on AWS networking experience and heavy scenario practice are the most effective preparation.

How many questions are on the ANS-C01 exam and how long is it?+

The live ANS-C01 exam contains 65 questions to be answered in 170 minutes — 50 scored plus 15 unscored questions AWS uses to trial future content — using multiple-response and matching question types. Our full-length practice mock mirrors the length and timing with a 65-question, 170-minute timer.

You can sit the exam at a Pearson VUE test centre or online with proctoring from home.

What score do you need to pass the ANS-C01?+

AWS scores ANS-C01 on a scaled range of 100 to 1,000, and you need 700 to pass. The score is scaled rather than a simple percentage, and there are no per-domain pass marks — you need an overall 700. Our practice mock flags a pass at 70% to give you a comparable target.

How much does the ANS-C01 exam cost?+

The ANS-C01 exam costs 300 USD (prices vary by region), and the certification is valid for three years. Everything on this hub — questions, mock exams, glossary, and domain guides — is completely free.

Who should take the ANS-C01?+

The Advanced Networking - Specialty is aimed at network engineers and architects who work with AWS and hybrid networks.

AWS recommends five or more years of networking experience with two or more years of cloud and hybrid networking experience. The Solutions Architect associate or professional credentials are helpful precursors.

What jobs and salaries can the ANS-C01 lead to?+

ANS-C01 is relevant to roles such as network engineer, cloud network architect, and infrastructure engineer, where designing and operating AWS and hybrid networks is the job. It is a specialized, well-regarded credential.

How much any certification moves compensation depends heavily on geography, seniority, and experience, so treat any single salary figure with caution. ANS-C01 is best viewed as validation of AWS networking depth rather than a guaranteed raise on its own.

How long does it take to study for the ANS-C01?+

Most candidates need two to three months of focused study. Learn the four domains while practising with VPC, Transit Gateway, and Route 53, then commit heavily to full-length timed scenario practice.

A good rhythm is to study one domain at a time and drill its topic quiz immediately, then move to full-length mocks — reviewing every explanation, including for questions you answered correctly, because ANS-C01 distractors are built from plausible but incorrect network designs.

How should you prepare for the ANS-C01?+

Study the four domains above, giving the most time to Network Design and Security, then drill practice questions domain by domain. Every MockAPI question reveals a full explanation and tells you why each wrong answer is wrong.

When your domain scores are solid, sit full-length timed mocks, and pair this with hands-on VPC, Transit Gateway, and DNS work. Use the glossary to nail terminology, and aim to score consistently above the pass mark before you book.

Can you take the ANS-C01 exam online?+

Yes. You can sit ANS-C01 at a Pearson VUE testing centre or online from home with OnVUE remote proctoring, which requires a quiet private room, a stable connection, a webcam, and government-issued photo ID.

If you do not pass, AWS lets you retake after a 14-day waiting period, with no limit on attempts, though each attempt requires a new paid registration. Results post to your AWS Certification account within a few business days.

What certification should you take after the ANS-C01?+

The Advanced Networking - Specialty pairs naturally with the Solutions Architect - Professional and the Security - Specialty for a deep infrastructure profile.

Pairing it with hands-on AWS and hybrid networking work — Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, and Route 53 designs — is what turns the credential into practical capability.
